Fifteen years ago, breast enlargement was out of reach for most people as only the rich and famous could afford it. However, that has all changed and a boob job is now common place. The number of breast augmentation procedures carried out in the UK continues to increase year upon year. But what are the reasons as to why women choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery?
The main underlying reason as to why women choose to have breast augmentation is quite simple. It is so that they feel better about themselves because they feel better about their appearance. Side effects often include improved self-confidence and improved self-esteem. The question then becomes: Why didn't women who have had a breast augmentation feel good about their breasts beforehand?
There are many reasons for this; we shall look at some of the most common ones:
Childbirth and breastfeeding
Childbirth and breastfeeding can result in one or more of the following:
- a loss in breast tissue
- asymmetrical breasts
- sagging of the breasts
- changes in breast shape
Many women turn to cosmetic surgery after childbirth in order to help them recover their shape and feel good about their body and themselves again.
Ageing
As we all know, with age, gravity starts to kick in and the breasts begin to sag. This is usually accompanied by a gradual loss in breast tissue. Breast augmentation provides a quick fix by increasing the breast volume, shape and pertness.
Small breasts
We come in all shapes and sizes and we can only play the cards that we are dealt with. Well not now! Women who have naturally small breasts are one of the main groups of those opting for breast enlargement. For many of these women, their breast size will have played on their minds since their early teens.
Also in this category are those women who have lost weight or body fat and have found that their breast volume has decreased substantially. Since breast tissue is mainly fat, the effects of reducing body fat through diet and exercise can be quite noticeable upon the breasts.
Breast shape and congenital defects
Some women are unhappy with the shape of their breasts, some were born with asymmetrical breasts and others have congenital breasts defects. Again, these are reasons why women turn to breast augmentation in order to improve their appearance and how they feel about themselves.
Mastectomy, disease and traumatic events
Mastectomy e.g. due to breast cancer, disease leading to deformity e.g. infection and traumatic events e.g. car crash are all potential causes of women to choose breast augmentation in order to restore their appearance.
Falling breast augmentation surgery costs
As described in the introduction, breast augmentation surgery prices have fallen over the years. Consequently, it has become affordable to more and more women. These lower breast surgery prices will have tempted some women into having breast augmentation when otherwise the temptation would not have been present.
Social acceptance augmentation surgery costs
As breast augmentation surgery has become more and more common, it has become more socially acceptable. Social acceptance is a factor for some women to make the decision to have breast augmentation. Fifteen years ago, it would not have been a consideration for them.
Availability of breast augmentation clinics
As the cosmetic surgery market continues to grow, there are more and more cosmetic surgeries and clinics being established in various locations throughout the UK. Availability and marketing by these companies makes breast augmentation easily accessible for most women.
Other reasons
There are many other reasons as to why women may choose breast augmentation, It may be to satisfy the desire of a partner for example or due to pressure or expectations from others. Some reasons are questionable but let's leave ethics for another day!
