The main reason that people go abroad for surgery is that the cost is typically less than UK breast enlargement prices.
Breast enlargement surgery abroad is an option worth considering. There are some horror stories of cosmetic surgery abroad gone wrong yet there are many reports of satisfied customers who are extremely happy with the care they received and the overall experience. Not to mention, the low price that they paid!
Risk versus Cost
At the end of the day, the decision to go abroad for your breast enlargement surgery is, for most people, a balance of cost versus risk.
We will not try and persuade you in any way as to your decision to go abroad or not for cosmetic surgery. We will just present you with the things that you need to consider so that you can make your own informed decision.
Cost
Once you have obtained a price from your chosen clinic abroad, you will need to add to this cost:
- Travel Costs
Flights, taxis etc. - Accommodation Costs
How many overnight stays you are likely to need and how much hotels or B&B's cost near the surgery. - Food Costs
Meals etc. - Travelling Companion
Will you be travelling alone or taking someone along with you for moral support? If so will that person be funding their own trip? - Additional Time Off Work
There may be a cost or a loss of earnings to consider here due to additional travelling time needed to go abroad. This will depend upon your own personal circumstances.
The Clinic Abroad
If you know someone or can speak to someone who you can trust, who has used a particular clinic abroad then this may help you choose. However, if that person had no complications then you will not get an idea as to how good the aftercare service is.
You should ensure that you are able to communicate effectively with the medical staff so that you can seek clear answers to your questions and concerns. You may need a translator.
You should also check that the clinic has appropriate insurance which covers your procedure and covers the fact that you are a non-resident of that country.
Ensure that you obtain satisfactory answers from the clinic and the medical staff there. Obviously, if you do not then you should seriously consider an alternative clinic, either abroad or in the UK.
The Healthcare Commission regulates private cosmetic surgery clinics in England but it is not responsible for regulating clinics abroad. Not all countries will have the same strict regulations as in England.
Aftercare
Nearly all the UK cosmetic surgery clinics offer an excellent level of breast enlargement aftercare service where you can make an appointment, at no extra cost, to see the surgeon who operated on you. Typically aftercare in the UK will include implant replacement for conditions such as capsular contracture, again at no additional cost.
Aftercare is one area of going abroad that you seriously need to consider and research thoroughly with your chosen clinic. If all goes swimmingly well, you won't need to call upon the aftercare service. But what happens if there are complications with your breast surgery? Will you be able to jump back on a plane to visit the clinic again? There's the additional cost of travel and time off work to consider. The NHS would certainly treat you if you had an infection for example, however, the NHS would not replace your implants if they had to be removed. This is where the cost versus risk factor really matters. If you do decide to go abroad, please thoroughly research their aftercare service in detail. The choice is yours.
Getting Advice on Cosmetic Surgery Abroad
You should seek advice from your GP and guidance from the Government Department Of Health.
The Department Of Health, amongst other guidance, provide a list of practitioners' qualifications in various different countries and what they mean. You should check that the surgeons at your chosen clinic abroad are appropriately qualified.
